This morning my outdoor shoes were full of warm rainwater. Everything in the garden is greener, bigger and heavier. The air is fresh, and all foliage smells are enhanced by the humidity. The tree branches are hanging lower, almost to the grass. They bow in gratitude: more rain is coming.
I love rainy summer days, warm and sleepy. They make the whole world somehow closer and cozy, and you feel wrapped in a fuzzy greenish-grey duvet. Rainy days are magical because they are my creative home days.
It means that I’m starting to illustrate my volcano story. The editor is not finished with the book yet, but how can I wait? It’s not a picture book, but a chapter book and the layout of illustrations are simple. All the characters are already here; I can see and hear them. I’ll start in the middle, with one of my favourite scenes, maybe the one with Mila pulling a bucket of lava from the volcano crater or the boys flying with their eyes closed?
The watercolour media will work well for this book. Probably, I will pour paint over some loose and chaotic sketch work. It should nicely accompany the somewhat reckless actions of this book’s characters.
Now back to the garden, while it’s not raining again. Today’s colouring page is the dogwood. It’s starting to bloom. My “flowers” are green and white, but there are pink varieties as well.
